Expert Wood Fence Installation
A wood fence does something no other material can quite match — it adds warmth. Cedar boards age gracefully, split-rail fences suit the landscape they stand in, and the texture of real wood gives a property a character that vinyl and aluminum simply don’t have. Allen Fence Company has been building custom wood fence installations across Peterborough, Durham Region, and the surrounding communities for years, and we take the craft seriously. Every post is set properly, every board selected for quality, and every job finished the way we’d want our own yard to look.
Wood remains one of the most versatile fencing options available. Whether you want a tall privacy fence along a busy street, a classic post and rail running the length of a rural property, or something with a little more architectural detail like board and batten or horizontal planking, wood gives you options. We work with pressure-treated lumber and western red cedar, both proven performers in Ontario’s climate — holding up through freeze-thaw cycles and holding their look for decades when properly installed.

Wood Fence Styles
We build several distinct wood fence styles, and each one suits a different need. Here’s what we offer and where each style works best.
Privacy Fence

A privacy fence puts solid cedar boards from post to post with no gaps between them, giving you a full screen from the street, from neighbours, and from the alley behind your property. Most residential privacy fences run 6 feet, though we can build taller sections where needed. We use dog-eared cedar boards as the standard, but smooth-top boards are available if you want a cleaner, more contemporary line. Posts are set in concrete at the proper depth for Ontario frost conditions — this is one of the most common places where budget installs fail, and we don’t cut corners on it.
Friendly Neighbour Fence

The friendly neighbour style alternates boards on opposite sides of the rail, so both sides of the fence look finished. Each side sees a mix of boards and small gaps — enough airflow to reduce wind load, and enough coverage that neither yard has a “back of the fence” view. This style is popular along shared property lines where both neighbours want something that looks good from their side. It’s also slightly more wind-resistant than a solid board fence, which matters on exposed lots.
Board and Batten Fence

Board and batten is a classic vertical-plank style where wide boards are installed first, then narrower batten strips cover the seams. The result is a fence with a strong visual rhythm — clean lines, solid coverage, and a slightly more formal appearance than a standard privacy fence. It suits properties where the fence is visible from the street and you want it to read as intentional architecture rather than just a barrier. We can cap the posts and top rail for a finished look that complements the style.
Horizontal Fence

Horizontal fencing runs the boards parallel to the ground rather than vertically, which gives the fence a modern, low-profile look. It reads differently in a yard — wider and calmer rather than tall and vertical — and it pairs well with newer home designs and landscaping that favours clean geometry. Horizontal boards need to be properly kiln-dried and the frame needs to be robust, since this orientation can introduce more warp risk if the material or framing is substandard. We spec the build accordingly so the fence stays true over time.
Post and Rail Fence

Post and rail is the workhorse of rural fencing across Ontario, and we build a lot of it. Typically two or three rails run between round or square posts, marking property boundaries, lining laneways, and framing agricultural land. It’s not a privacy fence — it defines space without enclosing it — and that open look is exactly what makes it right for acreages, hobby farms, and properties where you want the boundary clear but the sightlines open. We build split-rail and milled-post styles, and we can add wire mesh backing if you need to contain livestock or pets.
Why Choose Allen Fence Company
We are a family-owned fence contractor specializing in wood fence installation, serving Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Durham Region, and the communities in between. When you call us, you’re talking to the people who will actually show up and do the work — not a call centre booking a subcontractor. We carry full liability insurance, we pull permits where required, and we stand behind what we build.
Our wood fence installations are built to last. We use quality cedar and pressure-treated lumber, set posts at the correct depth for Ontario’s frost line, and fasten everything properly — not with whatever’s on hand. The difference shows after the first winter. We’ve seen plenty of fences installed by others that start leaning or rotting within a few years; we don’t build that way.
If you’re comparing quotes, we’re happy to talk through what separates one estimate from another. Not all wood fence installation quotes are built the same, and understanding what’s included — post depth, fastener type, lumber grade — matters more than the number on the bottom line.
